"D" as in "Dillsboro", that is.
Traveling South on the Blue Ridge Parkway from Hendersonville this time of year, the scenery is amazing. Long range views of blue mountain ridges, one behind another, contrasted by a foreground of flaming foliage on hillsides folding over each other in some riotous game of "top this!"
Plan A: lunch at one of the restaurants on West Main Street in Sylva after a Fall drive on the Parkway.
Plan Foiled: town of Sylva blacked out. We're guessing someone on the road construction crew cut the wrong cable.
This was not a pretty picture. One restaurant was filling with a thick haze from the kitchen as the non-functioning hood vent refused smoke from the grill.
Plan D: head out of town, through all the intersections with non-functioning traffic lights, to Dillsboro, hoping to find a good lunch place.
Much to our surprise, we stumbled across Kostas Family Restaurant! No, it's not related to our South Asheville Kosta's, but a recent addition to a Florida family's "Kostas Family Restaurant" holdings.

They'd been open since mid-August and were doing a good business. Of course, all of us who'd been in Sylva for lunch were now greeting each other at Kostas.
Kostas interior is open, spacious and has a clean, fresh feel.

PIC and I chose to enjoy the great weather and sit outside on the deck that fronts the entire length of the building (see top photo).
I couldn't resist taking this shot of my soup spoon standing at attention in the lusciously thick cup of Split Pea "soup of the day" (Cup/$1.95, Bowl/$3.50).

Last night we had dinner with friends and they were laughing about my occasional pictures of food taken with bites missing. Well, David and Laura, it happened again. This Chicken Caesar Pita ($6.95) was so tempting, I completely forgot to take a photo before diving in.
Check out the strips of chicken breast in this thing. Can there be too much chicken? The Romaine and diced tomatoes were in there, topped, along with the chicken, with Parmesan and Caesar dressing. The wrap was deliciously flavored, but I would have preferred a little less chicken and a little more Romaine.

PIC's Patty Melt ($6.75) (Grilled Melt?) consisted of a grilled Angus patty on grilled rye bread with American cheese and grilled onions and came with fries. This nice burger alternative was cooked as ordered, served good and hot and thoroughly enjoyed by PIC.

Homemade Greek Rice Pudding ($2.50) was a must try for me. What made it Greek? The server said she thought there might be Vodka or Ouzo in it, but that was not the case. Wishful thinking perhaps? Regardless, it was absolutely wonderful, Greek, American, Asian, whatever. I love rice pudding and this was a good one served in a very generous portion!

It looks like Kostas is working on a website, but they do have an active Facebook page. Restaurateurs take note - if you don't have a website (for some insane reason) at least get a (FREE and EASY) Facebook Page up and running.

I LOVE rice pudding! I'm wondering if "greek" has to do with how it's cooked?? Many rice puddings are baked, but I like mine cooked on the stove, which is what that looks like. Must google....
