I spent most of yesterday (Saturday) at Wolf Laurel Ski Resort (officially named Wolf Ridge Ski Resort) about 30 minutes north of Asheville, with a group of outstanding high school kids. These kids say please, thank you, yes ma'am and do community service even though it's not required - a pleasure to spend time with.
While the kids snowboarded, I kept myself entertained by reading, writing and people watching. The thing that really got me was the quality of the people at Wolf. There were school groups, church groups, boy scout groups, families and even a 4-H group. Everyone shared the inside picnic tables and kept the place picked up.
Just like you find at a lot of health clubs and fitness centers, what you wear is paramount at ski resorts like Vail, Whistler, Sundance, Steamboat, Durango, Breckenridge, Aspen, etc.
Not so in North Carolina. It's all about skiing, boarding and having fun here. At a maximum altitude of 5400 ft with many resorts maxing out well below 5000 ft, it's a completely different animal. Blowing man-made snow is a given and you count yourself lucky if the weather is cold enough so you can go up more than a half dozen times a season. You wear what works.
The people I truly love and count myself lucky to know are the kind of people I saw at Wolf wearing their camouflage hunting clothes:
These are good people descended from mountain pioneer stock with a "can-do" "git-'er-done" attitude. Their camo and Carhartt are waterproof, warm and easy to move around in. I can imagine them saying, "I don't need to go out and spend good money on some fancy-schmancy ski outfit when I have something that works just fine."
Since this IS a restaurant/food review blog, I will say that I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and tastiness of the BBQ Pork Sandwich meal. The flavor and texture of the pork was great and it was almost all meat with very little fat. The meal included fries (thin like McDonalds fries) and a drink for a total of $7.85. I felt like the price was fair although in general food is way overpriced at all the ski resorts. Can they justify the price because they have to haul it all up the mountain?

Now, now - you might want to leave Durango off of that list. Once upon a time USA Today did say we were the worst dressed community in the country (and proud of it!)
